Sancreed is a quiet village and civil parish within Penwith, Cornwall, situated just 3 miles west of Penzance.
Steeped in history, legend has it that Sancreed was founded by St Creden (or Sancredus), the 8th abbott of Evesham Abbey and as such the parish church, at the heart of the village, is named after him. Parts of the grade II listed church dates back to the 13th and 14th century. The church held a strong appeal during the late 19th, early 20th century with the 'Painters of Newlyn School' some of who are buried in the church yard including Stanhope Alexander Forbes, His wife Elizabeth Adela Forbes and T C Gotch.
A few hundred yards west of the church is the holy well, also known as St Uny's well, and bapitistry both which pre-date the church. The well once had a great reputation for healing and sickly children were bought many miles to be cured, particular during the first three Wednesdays of May. The stonework of the well is still in good condition and a copious flow of water still runs however the site is often overgrown.
Above the village, 172m above sea level is Sancreed Beacon. This stretch of moorland offers a variety of flora, fauna and historic remains, having been inhabited during the bronze age, as well as spectacular views across Mounts Bay. The remain of two burial mounds can been seen on the summit along with what is thought to be a Bronze Age hut.
Old mine shafts can still be seen from the two 19th century tin mines on Sancreed Beaon, "Wheal Argus" and "Beacon Mine".
During Napoleonic wars, the 'beacon' was lit on the top of the hill to send a message to the next beacon and the next and so on until London, warning of an invasion.
Sancreed House and Grounds:
The perfect rural retreat set in the grounds of the stunning Sancreed House located just three miles from the town of Penzance with its good road and rail links and the bustling historic fishing town of Newlyn with shops, restaurants, a Curzon Film House and art galleries. The venue provides peace and tranquillity yet affords easy access to explore all of the attractions that West Cornwall has to offer. As you enter the estate along the sweeping driveway lined with a coppice to one side and camellias to the other you will take in the beauty of this very special house.
Steeped in history, Sancreed House is a Grade II listed Georgian property built as the Vicarage in 1830. In the 1960's it was sold as a private dwelling and renamed 'Sancreed House’ and later purchased by the renowned Cornish landscape artist John Miller where it was his residence for 30 years until 1995. At this time, Sancreed House had strong links with the artist community and in particular Newlyn Society of Artists and the original cottages were used as residences for his students and celebrity friends. Some of John Miller’s revered works are displayed at the V&A Museum in London and locally in Truro Cathedral, St Michael's Mount, Penlee House, New Craftsman Gallery in St Ives and The Abbey Hotel in Penzance. Sancreed House was used as a film location in the adaption of Virginia Woolf's novel 'To The Lighthouse' as well as More Rhodes Around Britain and between 1995 and 2013 was run as an arts retreat before being purchased by the current owners.
