Porthleven Food & Music Festival

Written by Oliver Williams on

This month the peaceful harbourside village of Porthleven will explode with activity as the 10th anniversary of the Porthleven Food Festival begins. The event comprises of three days of fabulous Cornish food, drink and music with a superb line-up of local talent with food demos, stalls and the popular Chef's Theatre led by long-term patron of the festival Antony Worral Thompson.

There will be plenty to see and do with over 100 stalls and marquees expected. Mosey around the pretty harbour and enjoy the wide selection of delicious street food and local produce on offer whilst enjoying the sights and sounds. Music is a big part of the festival and this year's Lime Kiln Stage is to be presented in association with 'BBC Music Introducing in Cornwall' and will have many great under the radar artists and local musicians to enjoy.

The Chef's Theatre
The Chef’s Theatre will be back and this year will run for two days instead of one. Kicking off at 10am on Saturday with the popular Ready Steady Cook style competition between long standing patron of the festival Antony Worral Thompson and local restaurant owner Jude Kereama, whose restaurant Kota has been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand for four years in a row.

The event is very popular and has become somewhat of a tradition for the festival and will be the first of many live cooking demonstrations hosted by some of the top chefs from the South West and beyond.

Lime Kiln and Shipyard Stages
The Lime Kiln stage will be sat next to the harbour and is an excellent platform for up and coming artists to show off their material. Music will play from the stage all weekend with a great line-up from 'BBC Music Introducing to Cornwall' which supports 'unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar artists'. Expect to hear a nice mix of Cornish folk music, jazz, funk and choirs including the Porthleven School Signing Choir and the Porthleven Town Band.

In the evenings the Shipyard Stage will be hosting After Dark Sessions with an opening party on Friday Night including the brilliant local cover band Go Go Skank who will be playing well-loved 80's tunes.

Anti Plastic - Fantastic!
Every year the festival has a new theme which highlights something of importance locally. This year the festival is promoting an eco-friendly message with an ‘anti-plastic’ theme and efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastics. The world’s oceans are being filled with plastic as every year a staggering 700 billion plastic bottles end up in the ocean. This is a big problem as plastic bottles take 450 years to decompose. Other types of plastic that decompose faster are also a big problem as the toxic micro-plastics get ingested by marine life and causes great harm to the ecosystem.

You can expect the windows of local businesses in Porthleven to be decorated to reflect this years anti-plastic theme. Also be on the lookout for window stickers inviting you to come in and refill your water bottle.
