TALL SHIPS REGATTA
This year the Tall Ships Regatta is coming to Falmouth. From Thursday 28th - Sunday 31st August, 2014 the action will be focused around the harbour as more than 30 Tall Ships gather for the race from Falmouth to Royal Greenwich.
For those of you who don't know, Tall Ships are those ships with a height of at least 30 ft and are used with partially trained crew who are undertaking the art of sail training. The Tall Ship races are intended to promote international friendship as well as education making it a fun and physical challenge for the participants. Over 50% of each crew must be young people. The ships are often run by charities, schools and the Navy of various countries. There are two annual races held in European waters.
This is the first Tall Ships race that has taken place solely in British waters. Falmouth will be alive with activities, exhibitions, markets and live music, as well as a colourful ships' crew parade. On Saturday night there will be fireworks prior to the start of the race on Sunday 31st August. The race starts with the ships sailing between St. Mawes and Pendennis Castle accompanied by a flotilla of small boats waving farewell to the race goers.
The ships themselves will be berthed at County Wharf and Duchy Wharf and are open to the public from 28th August. You don't need to buy tickets. The Tall Ship Mercedes is offering Day Sailing opportunities on the Thursday and Friday.
