You are here:
Porthallow is a small fishing village on the east coast of The Lizard peninsula, just south of the Helford River in Cornwall. Porthallow means "port at the end of the moor". There is a stony beach which is privately owned but which can be used by everyone, villager or tourist alike. Just off the coast are The Manacles, a rocky outcrop which has caused many shipwrecks over the years, making this area superb for diving.
The village pub, The Five Pilchards, is only a stone's throw from Bank Cottage, serves good food and has a snooker table. Another good pub to visit is The Shipwrights Arms, in nearby Helford Village, which is only a short drive away or you can catch the foot passenger ferry across the river. On the way to Porthallow you will pass The Fat Apples Cafe, which is great, child and dog friendly and serves excellent crab sandwiches. While you are down on The Lizard, you must visit Roskilly's where they make their delicious ice cream, home made cakes and snacks, and serve a great Sunday lunch.
For the more sporty minded visitor, there is a Dive Centre in Porthkerris, which is the next cove along, (Porthkerris Divers), and windsurfing and kayak hire in Coverack (Coverack Windsurfing Centre). Boat hire is available from Helford Boat Hire. Coasteering is available in Falmouth through Elemental UK. (If you don't know what this is, it means exploring the coastline by climbing, jumping, scrambling and swimming)! For a different mode of transport, why not try a Segway at Goonhilly (Cornwall Segway).
