Falmouth is a lively town and busy port on the River Fal. It is home to the National Maritime Museum, and the area where this is situated has been developed in recent years to accommodate a range of shops, pubs and restaurants, including Rick Stein's fish restaurant.
The main shopping area has recognisable national chains, but also plenty of individually owned shops selling a variety of food, clothing, art and collectibles. Pasties feature regularly in the shops and of course the tourist has to sample them all to find their particular favourite!
The harbour has plenty to recommend it and is the hub for lots of water sports, including sailing, fishing, boat tours, etc. Pendennis Castle rises high above the harbour and has a commanding view of the river and across to the Roseland Peninsula and St. Mawes. Also on this headland is the Ships and Castle Leisure Pool with its river run and wave machine, this is a popular destination for families.
Local beaches include Gyllyngvase and Castle beach and nearby Maenporth and Swanpool are also well worth a visit. There are plenty of smashing places to eat and drink - one of our particular favourites is The Cove at Maenporth, which offers a range of lunches, tapas, and dinner menus and the brilliantly named Hunky Dory in Falmouth itself.
Falmouth is home to a host of seasonal activities including the Falmouth Oyster Festival which coincides with the oyster harvesting season, Henri Lloyds Falmouth Week 2014 - an annual sailing and yachting regatta www.falmouthweek.co.uk and the 2014 Tall Ships Regatta.
