Pendeen is set on the rugged West Cornwall coast between Zennor and St Just at the very end of the country. Originally an industrial town based around copper and tin mining and you can see the evidence all around as you explore the streets. Several of the mines are open as a visitor attraction now and it's a strange feeling to walk down a tunnel knowing that you are underneath the sea and to get an indication of just what a miner's daily routine was like.
The countryside in this region changes as you arrive from the East into something more like Dartmoor or Bodmin Moor with rocky outcrops amongst scrubby fields kept in shape by sheep and cattle. For walkers and bird watchers the area is a magnet with a stunning shoreline of cliffs and coves dotted with ancient ruins dating back to 4000 BC and Celtic burial site. There are some excellent beaches at pendeen with golden sand interspersed with jagged rocky outcrops and dogs are allowed all year round. All of the coves and beaches are a bit of a walk down narrow paths but well worth the hike with the dog to share the beach with as few people as possible.
