Situated close to St. Austell, Charlestown is a small village with an historic harbour. Built in the Georgian era the port was used to ship copper from local mines, and later shipped china clay from nearly quarries.  By the 1990s the china clay market had virtually disappeared and the harbour was sold to private owners and is often used for filming.

Charlestown is quiet and unspoilt and has its own beach.   There is a museum, pubs, restaurants and a shop, with nearby St. Austell home to large supermarkets, bakers, shops, etc.  The docks house several vintage ships which are open to the public.
